Later, when Tristan had gone to bed and Jesse was left to prowl the silent house, he thought briefly about shifting in order to roam the wilderness that lay behind the ranch. He never did well with being indoors for long, and as a wolf, he could run for miles without growing tired, exulting in the scents and sounds that were comparatively dull and muted even to his enhanced senses when in human form. But he had promised Matt, and he didn’t want to disappoint him.

He decided to follow Tristan’s example and put himself to bed, but when he pulled back the quilt on the bed he’d spent the previous night in, he hesitated. It looked lonely and cold, somehow. He ended up slinking down the hallway into Matt’s room. And there, as he lay on soft cotton sheets beneath the fluffy down comforter, the scent of Matt filled his nostrils and he fell asleep with unusual ease.

He stirred suddenly, senses on full alert, knowing he was no longer alone. Matt was crawling in beside him beneath the downy comforter in the gray light of dawn, smelling of outside and night and the wild. He let Matt pull him close, and fell asleep again, pressed against Matt’s warm body, held in his strong arms.
